The proposed legislation introduced in the Senate by Ted Cruz (R-TX) and in the House by Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) requires the State Department to report to Congress on whether the Muslim Brotherhood meets the legal criteria to be deemed a terror group. A designation is necessary to fight terrorism by enabling the US to take action that could restrain funding for the group’s activities. This bill will hopefully serve as a reality check for those Members of Congress who have condemned Israel’s decision to label six Palestinian NGOs as terrorist organizations.
