Rabbi Fischer Cited in RealClearPolitics on Threat of Unions to Safe Learning Environment
June 22, 2023

An op-ed in Real Clear Politics, “Dodgers Strike Out With Fans, Kowtow to Radical Teachers Unions” by Brenda Lebsack and Rebecca Friedrichs, cites CJV Vice President Rabbi Dov Fischer articulating a Jewish perspective on the threat posed by public school teachers to young children, especially those raised in families that cherish religious values. The writers addressed the recent uproar when the LA Dodgers honored “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence,” a group that mocks Catholic values and practices. The California Teachers Union defended the group, insisting the Dodgers go ahead with plans to award the group for its “decades of community ministry.”

The op-ed points out that “Catholics are not the only Americans offended by the CTA’s endorsement. Jews, Muslims, Protestants, and teachers like us are outraged as well.” [That earlier piece by Lebsack also quotes Rabbi Fischer.] Concerning a Jewish perspective on teachers, the op-ed says:

Rabbi Dov Fischer, a senior congregational rabbi and law professor in California, comments in his EdSource article, “The state’s school system, established to provide a safe learning climate for all students regardless of their ethnicity, race, language or religious affiliation, is now [thanks to unions] a social laboratory where students and families from devout faiths feel ostracized.”
