The Jewish organizations involved in the brief included the groups Jews for Religious Liberty, Agudath Israel of America, the Coalition for Jewish Values, the Rabbinical Council of America, and the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America.

The brief was written by attorneys with the law firm of Jones Day on behalf of Jews for Religious Liberty, Agudath Israel of America, the Coalition for Jewish Values, the Rabbinical Council of America, and the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America.

“Enforcement of the Johnson Amendment seems to be inconsistent and even capricious,” Menken said in a statement to the CJN. “While I’m no fan of ‘politics from the pulpit,’ clergy speaking their personal opinions should not be censured for doing so, or their houses of worship penalized.”
